Dr Rajeev Jayadevan completed his MBBS and MD General Medicine with top honours from Christian Medical College (CMC) Vellore in 1995. He received training in Clinical Epidemiology and Public Health from Erasmus University, Rotterdam, Netherlands. He was awarded MRCP (UK) from England in 1996. He obtained Board Certification in Medicine and Gastroenterology (Fellowship) from New York Medical College, and spent 3 years in the UK and 10 years in the US before returning to his hometown of Cochin. He has extensive international experience of performing over 20,000 endoscopies, in addition to research and publications. He established the department of Gastroenterology at Sunrise Hospital, Cochin in 2009.
His academic track record is exceptional. He was the Kerala state SSLC second rank holder in 1984, Kerala state Medical entrance first rank holder in 1986 and Kerala state Engineering entrance 4th rank holder in 1986.
After being placed first in his class in the final MBBS examinations at CMC Vellore in 1992, he went on to win the Madras University (Dr MGR) gold medal in MD General medicine in 1995.
In addition to his clinical work, Dr Jayadevan volunteers to teach in schools on assorted health topics, directly interacting with students of all ages. He writes on complex health matters and regularly appears on TV and radio. He has written detailed analytical articles on over 80 assorted health related topics. His book ‘Think like a Doctor’ was released in 2019.
During the pandemic he wrote several scientific articles for doctors, policy makers and the general public, and took an active role in educating the public on the topic. He has chaired the Tuesday COVID-19 meetings in Cochin continuously for four years, where experts in various domains meet up, brainstorm together and analyse the latest science and other public health updates.
Dr Jayadevan was regularly invited to attend the COVID meetings held by Government of India Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. He was the first to publish on doctor deaths in India, and also the first to publish on the safety profile of vaccination, which helped reduce public anxiety about COVID-19 vaccines. He was also the first to publish on 3rd dose vaccination outcomes, during the 3rd wave in India.
In addition to his work on COVID-19, his articles and communication skills helped bring clarity on various contemporary public health issues such as the Monkeypox outbreak, rise in Rabies cases and sudden cardiac deaths. In 2024, he authored the largest study done in India on the topic of workplace safety for doctors.
He is regularly quoted in major national and regional newspapers in India, Press Information Bureau, ANI and his statements have been covered by media in several other countries like Italy, UK, US, France, Switzerland, Pakistan, Venezuela, Mexico, Vietnam Indonesia and Singapore. He is frequently invited to write for the science page of The Hindu newspaper. He has, in the course of over a year, trained over 6000 school principals on the scientific measures required to handle the pandemic, that represents almost 1/3 of all the schools in Kerala.
His Twitter (X) account @RajeevJayadevan has over 22,000 latest scientific developments, which he updates after analysing the published research papers. His account is followed by people across the world, including policymakers.
He has appeared regularly on multiple regional, national and international TV channels including CNN, NTDV, India Today, CNBC, Wion, Doordarsan and Mirror Now. He has featured in Bloomberg News, DW News (Germany), multiple podcasts and Radio Singapore and Dubai eye Radio. He has been interviewed by prominent media personnel including Barkha Dutt, Shereen Bhan, Karan Thapar and The Guardian (UK).
Having championed several social causes including prevention of road accidents, cancer prevention, noise pollution, nutrition, CPR training, fire safety, self-defence, prevention of violence in healthcare settings, improving doctor-patient relationship, preventing teen alcoholism and tobacco use, Dr Rajeev Jayadevan was the President of IMA (Indian Medical Association) Cochin from 2019-2020. He was adjudged the best IMA branch president in Kerala during his recent term. He was adjudged the best IMA branch secretary in India in 2014. He was awarded the Dr Munagekar award for research by National IMA in 2023. He was the Kerala state IMA convener for communication skills training for doctors for 7 years. He serves on the ethics committee of two hospitals and is on the editorial board of two scientific journals. As a matter of personal preference, he has declined multiple awards outside of professional societies.
